Who we are
We work for carers – with carers – and always with their best interests at heart.
Carers Count is a not-for-profit service facilitated by the charity, Cloverleaf Advocacy, that supports unpaid carers within Calderdale.
Caring for a loved one can be emotionally and physically challenging and often overwhelming at times. It is important to know that you are not alone on this journey; we are here to support you every step of the way.
We work with carers who are aged 18 and over and give their time to someone with a physical disability, long-term illness, an older person, a child with additional needs, a learning disability and/or mental health issue (including dementia)
Our dedicated team is on hand to offer advice, information, advocacy, support groups and activities for unpaid carers across all HX postcodes, OL14 and HD6.
We are experts in our fields and cover everything related to unpaid carer roles from benefits advice, raising awareness for carers, meditation sessions and wellbeing support to understanding your rights as a carer.
We also work with a wide range of professional health and care services, Calderdale council, charities, and community groups to offer you the best possible support.
Together we can navigate the challenges of caregiving, and you don’t have to face them alone.
To find out more about the services we provide, please telephone our front-of-house team on 01422 369101 or visit the Contact Us section of this website.

FAQs

On this page, you can find answers to our most frequently asked questions from what a carer is to how to report feedback to our service. If your question isn’t answered on here, please get in touch and we’ll try our best to answer.
There are approximately 21,369 carers in Calderdale. Carers are those who provide unpaid care for relatives. Neighbours, friends or people in the community who are ill, frail, are disabled, or who have mental ill-health or drug and or alcohol dependency.
Many people may not see themselves as a carer, often feeling they are simply helping out friends or family. But if you provide any unpaid support to a loved one—whether it’s around the clock or just a few hours each week—you are, in fact, a carer. This might mean helping someone with daily tasks like getting washed and dressed, picking up groceries, preparing meals, or simply ensuring they are safe and comfortable
A parent carer is a parent caring for a child under 18 with additional needs. For example, the child may be autistic, have a physical disability, learning difficulties, or mental health needs. You don’t have to live with the child to be considered a parent carer.
No. There is a difference between being a carer and being employed by an organisation in a job role such as Care Worker’, Support Worker, or Healthcare Assistant, etc. The term ‘carer’ should always refer to a person caring for someone on an unpaid basis or claiming benefits like Carer’s Allowance.
No, we are not a healthcare provider. Our team provides advice, information, advocacy, support groups, and activities to support carers.
Any adult who is caring for another person in Calderdale can access the service, whether you are caring for someone over the age of 18 or for a child. It is a free, independent support service. If Carers Count can’t help, we will try and find a service that can.
We offer a wide range of support for your caring role. This includes emotional support, such as 1:1 advice, group sessions, and opportunities to connect with other carers in similar situations, and practical assistance, including:
- Information and advice
- Carers assessments
- Emergency planning
- Help navigating the caring role
- Peer support groups
- Training, events and activities
- Signposting to additional support/services
- Specialist support for young carers (18-25) and those caring for people with mental health conditions
If you are a carer for someone aged 18 or older, you are eligible to complete a Carers Conversation Form. This form, currently being tested as an alternative to the Carers Needs Assessment form, will still assess how your caregiving role affects different aspects of your life. A feedback form is included for you to share your thoughts on this new assessment approach. The assessment can be completed independently or with support from a social worker or a member of our team. It aims to identify support options available to you, including information and advice, assistance for the person you care for, or possibly a carer’s personal budget.
For more information about completing a Carer’s Conversation form, please call us on 01422 369101.
A carer’s personal budget is provided by the council to help address an unmet need of a carer. It can be used to fund support such as a short break, assistance with accessing social and leisure activities, health and wellbeing treatments, and educational courses.
We offer a variety of groups for carers, including peer support groups in key areas across Calderdale. Regular sessions include Cake Club, Women’s Wellbeing, the Sukoon Group, Chalte Chalte, and the Pot Luck Male Carers Group.
