Carers Count Calderdale celebrated another successful Age without Limits Day during Carers Week earlier this month.

Age Without Limits Day is an annual national event funded by the organisation Age Without Limits which was set up to tackle ageism. Held for the second year running by Carers Count, the event brings people together by challenging age-related stereotypes and recognising that ageism often goes unopposed in many areas of society.

The event, which was free for all carers and cared for to attend, featured a range of activities including indoor cricket, indoor curling, an egg-and-spoon race, and dance sessions, bringing together people of all ages in a fun and friendly spirit of competition.

Paula, who cares for her husband as diagnosed with Dementia shortly after lockdown and regularly attends Carers Count groups said: “When you first come to these events, you think you’re doing it purely for the person you care for, but it’s not really, it’s for you – combatting isolation and loneliness is really hard, and you sometimes feel you’re on your own.”  

She continued: “We’ve made so many new friends and we get involved in all sorts of activities. It’s great to do something as a couple and we look forward to it.”

Amanda Kershaw, Project Co-ordinator representing Active Care Providers at Calderdale Council, came along to see what ideas she could take away. Amanda, a qualified Occupational Therapist, said: “It’s all about having fun, bringing people together, sharing ideas and encouraging people to move more. The Age Without Limits event is a perfect example of that in action and it’s great to see.”

Carers Count Calderdale is a non-profit organisation facilitated by Cloverleaf Advocacy. As the name suggests, our mission is to champion unpaid carers who are over the age of 18 and live in the Calderdale area.

Our dedicated team work closely with carers and we are on hand to offer a wide range of support, including free, easy to access information, benefit advice and the promotion and protection of carers rights. We also facilitate a variety of activity days and support groups which give people the opportunity to meet up on a regular basis.
